December 2013 Chairman’s Note

Hello SAE Milwaukee Section Members and Friends,

With plenty of snow on the ground and the temperatures well below freezing, winter has definitely arrived. Our annual Student Night in November was a great success with five of the engineering schools in our area participating. We awarded over $6000 in prize money to support these schools and it was impressive at the caliber of work and innovation these Student Sections have in these project vehicles. If you have never been to our Annual Student Night, I encourage you to join us next year.

December/January is typically our winter break for SAE events, but starting in February we have a full schedule through the summer with tours, competitions and outings you will not want to miss. Please keep your calendars open and keep an eye on your mailbox for upcoming newsletters with the details.

I wish all of you Happy Holidays and a great start to the New Year. See you in 2014!

Hello SAE Milwaukee Section Members and Friends,

The kids are back to school, the leaves are starting to change colors, and we have all started to settle into our fall schedules. Our kickoff meeting on September 11th with Dave McLellan on the C7 Corvette was our highest attendance meeting to date with over 200 members and friends. We have a great lineup of meetings for the coming months so if you were unable to attend, be sure to keep some space open on your calendars.

This month on October 24th we will be getting an inside glimpse of Brooks Stevens. See where ergonomics, industrial design, engineering and research all cross paths. The list of companies Brooks Stevens has worked with is extensive and covers brands across many industries. They have influenced the design on many products and even some you might not expect. Please join us for what promises to be an exciting evening.

On November 7th UW-Madison will be hosting our annual Student Night. This is a great opportunity to support our Student Sections and see the projects they are working hard on for their upcoming SAE competitions. Additionally it is a great way to network with the students, who will be entering the workforce within the next couple of years. UW-Madison has graciously offered to host this year, so it is a great chance to see the UW-Madison Campus. Please join us for a fantastic evening.

On the local level, our Governing Board for the upcoming year was voted in at our June meeting and I congratulate all of those who were chosen for a position. We are always looking for new faces to help out. If you have an interest, please contact any of our board members and we will be more than happy to help you get involved at any level you desire. The hard work and dedication of our past Governing Board has kept the Milwaukee section alive and vibrant and is recognized as a premier section by SAE International.

The new Governing Board has been hard at work planning the events for this coming year. Our opening meeting will be a dynamite meeting with an in depth look at the new C7 Corvette. Presenting at this meeting will be the legendary Dave McLellan and this will certainly not be a meeting you will want to miss.

Please mark your calendars and be sure to register early for this meeting. You will not want to miss it!

Thank you and I look forward to seeing you in September.

April 2013 Chairman’s Note

Dear Members and Section Friends,

I hope by the time you read this newsletter spring temperatures will have arrived as I know I looked high and low on the first day of spring to try and find them. As we begin to wind down our year and prepare for summer, please be sure to keep your calendar open for our last few section events before summer break. They certainly will not disapoint.

With the coming CAFÉ standards there is certainly pressure on the automotive industry to find ways to meet these. Those of you that attended our Johnson Controls meeting were able to see the goals of these standards as well as the forefront of battery technology. We will finish out the year with two great meetings on current applications of this technology. April will be an up close and personal look into the Chevy Volt. Our May meeting will be at Sonex, manufacturers of electric aircraft. And as always, we will have discount tickets to Road America available for the June Sprints. The SAE tent will be there along with some of the student competition vehicles.

Attendance at this year’s meeting has been exceptional and is keeping our section strong and vibrant. We are already putting together the upcoming years meeting list, but as always we look for member input. If you have ideas for speakers, tours or events please contact any of our board mem-bers and let us know.

Additionally if you would like to take a more active role and help out on the governing board, please contact any board member. Our section is strong because of members like you and through the efforts of our members. I look forward to seeing you all at our upcoming meetings.

February 2013 Chairman’s Note

Dear Members and Section Friends,

I extend a warm greeting to you during these times of frigid temperatures. I hope you had an opportunity to enjoy the holiday season with friends and family while saving a bit of time to relax. As our activity resumes in February, we encourage you to reserve a few dates in the coming months to attend our Section meetings.

As our activity resumes in February, we encourage you to reserve a few dates in the coming months to attend our Section meetings.

There is a lot of chatter in today’s mobility industry regarding the migration to electric drivetrains. As a member of the Milwaukee Section, you have the unique opportunity to learn about the forefront development activity in electric vehicles. We begin with vehicle battery technology in March, hosted by Johnson Controls. An automotive focus on the Chevy Volt in April, followed by an electric aircraft meeting with Sonex.

A new board member, Nerissa Hanson, was recently recruited to our Section to focus on transition of SAE students to professional members. We hope the initiative will grow our section membership and increase participation by younger members.

Thanks again for participating in our section. Together, our increased membership and meeting attendance is enabling us to leverage more resources and sponsorship, providing more value back to you. Please continue your active role.

Best regards,

Jim Ryan

October’s meeting with Ladish Forging comes in response to many suggestions submitted in last year’s member surveys. We appreciate your input and have prepared another successful agenda. The SAE International ComVec will be held in Rosemont, IL on October 2nd-3rd followed by the Small Engine Technology Conference in Madison, WI on October 16-18th.

Our student chapters are busy preparing for the Student Grant Challenge at the November 28th section meeting. The Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) will host this year’s meeting. Don’t miss this opportunity for hands on interaction with the student design vehicles, and learning about their challenges and accomplishments at last years competitions. It’s also an opportunity for the professional members to critique the presentations and allocate this year’s financial grants among the participating schools.

Thank you for your continued involvement with our Section.
